"A Day Without an Immigrant" in Chicago (Trib link, Sun-Times link). 400,000 people in one place. No arrests. The tenor of the marchers? A small Mexican child throws his pop can onto the ground. His father runs over to pick it up. The police and the sanitation department both had little to do today. This is a community with pride, and one that works its collective ass off.
Immigrant discrimination is neither innovative nor novel. All of our grandparents and many of our parents went though it. Irish, Italians, Chinese, pick a decade and a nationality. Dear reader, if you ain't a Native American, you and your family ain't nothing but immigrants either. So much holier-than-thou crap about illegals. I wonder how many Minutemen ancestors hid away in steamer holds on the way to Ellis or Angel islands. Or were brought here forcibly the same way.
Do you want to bus tables? Wash dishes? Harvest crops? Mow lawns? Yeah, right. Well, these 400,000 people do it every day, for squat, and manage to put their kids through college while they're doing it. I have yet to meet many Anglos with that work ethic. Some Americans with small minds and big mouths should remember where they came from.
It wasn't from North America.
