Carless Under Construction

Chicago Carless is currently under renovation. I apologize in advance for any wonky things that happen when you visit the site in the meanwhile. I should have all the kinks worked out of the new template by week’s end soon. (And isn’t it a nifty one?) You can find progress updates in the comment thread of this post. Thanks for your patience!

  1. The theme overhaul is taking a week longer than I expected. However, I did just rollout (at long last) groovy, shiny RSS icons in the sidebar. Take a look and tell me if you think they’re effective.

  2. I’ve implemented a new and potentially controversial change today. In an effort to get people to share honest email addresses and use gravatar images in the comment threads on Chicago Carless, I’ve made comments by registration only starting today. You only have to register once, and if you are using a gravatar image, it will automatically appear whenever you comment. If you don’t have a gravatar or don’t know what one is, you can go here and find out. I’d appreciate reader feedback on this. How do you like this change? Thanks.

  3. Thanks! I have about 10% of posts on here “fixed” so far. Working hard to get the rest of them redone so thumbnails in archives work and stop mucking up the header area.

  4. As I’m sure you can tell, the new theme is now live. It’s a magazine-type theme called Mimbo, and I think it will make it easier for me to present the main topics that I write about (there are six, now featured below the masthead title), and for readers to: a.) finally know what they are(!); and b.) browse within each topic area.

As expected, there is some ongoing wonkiness with the site under the new template. For the past 18 months since I began using WordPress, I have uploaded photos manually instead of using the built-in WordPress image uploader. This was a habit leftover from when I used Movable Type to power Chicago Carless. However, the new template–and WordPress 2.9 in general–work much better when the main images in a post are uploaded the built-in way.

That’s why right now most individual entry pages on Carless have repeated images and odd bits of code atop the masthead. The main task now is to go back into each entry and re-upload the main photos using the built-in uploader.

For all 508 live posts on Carless. Ugh. Once I’m done, things will look a lot prettier around here. Wish me luck!…

  5. My new category scheme is now in place. Basically, I’m channelizing the major content on Carless to make it easier to browse like content. Next up is getting that aforementioned template rolled out and working. Better roll up my sleeves…

  6. Halfway there. I’ve successfully upgraded to WordPress from WordPress 2.5.x to 2.9.1. Flawlessly, I might add. I am very impressed with how easy the upgrade was, following the directions on the WordPress codex. If I had known it would have been this painless, I would have upgraded a lot sooner. Now on to the new template theme…
