Pizza preference is so close to the soul, I won't argue with you. I will tell you, for the best New York pizza I've ever eaten in five years in Chicago--the good, floppy kind with a tiny bit of crisp--and pie cut, thank you very much--head IMMEDIATELY to Santullo's on North Avenue in Wicker Park. That's the pie I grew up with in NYC. I would travel across town to go to Santullo's in a heartbeat.

The opposite of Santullo's would be PizzaRia. That's like the bad pizza I grew up with in Gotham--the kind you'd get in a Bodega in a bad neighborhood. Tasting of grease and cheap ingredients. You've been warned ;-)

First - Deep Dish isnt Chicago Pizza - it was invented for tourists and is rearely seen outside of river north. Most Chicagoans, especialy Italians eat a thin crust and square cut type of pizza - not the thin crust found in NY which is also delish.

2nd - theres been a dinner extinction in Chicago in the last decade. There were great Jewish delis, Soda shops and 24 dinners around the city - 1 by 1 the owners died out or sold out to build walgreens, CVS and chase banks. The economics of the dinner sadly dont support it in the city any more. They are quite good in the older suburbs though, especially the ethnic blue collar towns.

Thanks for the 11 City tip - I will check them out.
