Build a bridge through Dearborn Park. Better yet, demolish 80% of it and start over again now as that's likely going to happen in the future anyway. How long do people expect non-historic 2 story homes in the middle of downtown to last?

There's another wrinkle: the ongoing war at the Congress Hotel between UNITE-HERE Local #1 and Albert Nasser, the hotel owner. Haithcock has been very unsupportive of the 3.5 year old strikers, while Fioretti was the 1st Alderman to show up at the Dump Haithcock Rally sponsored by Local One right before the election. This is especially important because the only pressure that will likely work now is city pressure to do something about a landmark hotel that's falling apart and down to 30-35% occupancy.

I'm not sure Fioretti can win though. My fear is that the 27% or so he pulled is his natural total and won't be dramatically increased by the structure of the runoff. Racialized politics are real in Chicago, and I wonder how many votes for other African-American candidates (Askew, Johnson) will go to Fioretti and how many to Haithcock. The flip side of the development in the 2nd ward is the relative dilution, through displacement and growth of white population, of the African-American vote and population in the ward. How comfortable will that still potent block be with the first white alderman since the 19teens?

I'm not sold on Fioretti necessarily, I just want some movement on the Congress. Also, wouldn't it be great if the 2nd, 3rd (Pat Dowell hooray!) and 4th wards were all represented by independent (please Bob be one) alderman. As long as he can find city hall.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Jack was one of my colleagues in the room when Bob Fioretti asked for my birthday cake. It was Jack who coined the term, "pulling a Fioretti." -Mike Doyle]
