Well, the Chicago city council exercised its will yesterday, passing the controversial big-box $10 wage bill by a veto-proof 35 to 14 margin. Previous discussion here on Chicago Carless examined both sides of the issue. Now, as the dust settles...

Bryan, I tend to agree with you. I'm a liberal but I really think this was an issue of liberals feeling powerless at the national level trying to make things change at the local level. Oops! Walmart is a national player. It's apples and oranges and the only folks who'll lose out are Chicagoans. Calling upon our representatives in Washington would have been more useful than allowing union interests to ram a bill through our city council.

Regarding Indy, hey, your city (like Chicago) had the presence of mind to spruce up its downtown. In that alone you're miles ahead of some other Midwestern cities that still don't understand as goes the center so goes the city.

I think that the $10.00 minimum wage is a stupid idea, but I'm happy to see Chicago give it a try. If it turns out like I think it will, I'll get a giggle out of watching the natural consequences of Democrats run things. If it turns out the opposite--things actually get better, then I'm happy to be wrong about a matter like this. But I really doubt that I'll turn out to be wrong. At the very least, it will prove to be a good object lesson on such an extreme measure. Likewise, self-destruction of Chicago's regional economic standing can only help Indianapolis. Conversely, if implementing such a severe policy turns out to be a good thing, then it could point to a way for Indianapolis to improve its own economic situation. Either way, this extreme measure will do some good.
