I've lived in Chicago eleven years now, and have only attended the Taste twice. It's not something I'd do every year, but once every few years it's OK.

The first time I went, it was hotter than heck that day, and I too had the misgiving that the food was very ordinary, run-of-the-mill, "amusement park" food... I mean, how much pizza, corn-on-the-cob, and elephant ears can a person eat? About the most exotic thing I had that time were some pierogis I found.

The second time I went, however, two years ago, I did it right. I looked it up online, noted what I thought were the most interesting offerings, and actually wrote them down, making a list of what I wanted to try and where it was located. Then I went to the Taste with list in hand, and pretty much stuck to most of it. So I concluded that to get the most out of the Taste, you really have to plan it out in advance.

And that was during the "mild" summer of '04... in fact, it was chilly enough the day I went that I wore a sweatshirt!

But heck, hot weather at Chicago's summer festivals is something you just accept... whether it's the Taste, the Pride Parade, Northalsted Market Days, or whatever.

The first two years of The Taste were truly a treat. Comely well-dressed gents and ladies strolled--yes strolled--while delighting in food from finest Chicago restaurants. Dancing in the street broke out spontaneously here and there! But then suburbanites decided that "lots-o-food" was a reason to visit our fine city--and The Taste transformed itself! No more good music, no edgy fashion statements, but frozen pizza and kid attractions galore --just the way the sub-urbans like it! The Taste never recovered. It decided to compete with Navy Pier(!) for attention(and dollars) from those who grant us their once-a-year visit. Ah...but those first two years....
