“I saw your building on the news this morning…”
April wouldn’t have seemed complete without our now almost-monthly apartment fire. It was with great relief today at 5:45 a.m. I awoke to the gentle swooping of the rotor blades of the CBS 2 news ‘copter hovering outside my window, nigh 250 feet from the head of my bed.
We’re used to this stuff at Marina City by now. It was in the other tower. I didn’t bother to get out of bed. Turned out to be a bare candle left burning on top of a TV while the occupants slept. Lived but lost everything. I think that speaks for itself.
Here at the towers, fires and floods are like nuns — they always travel in pairs. So I expect more drama before the month is out. Still, the nine words I’ll hear all day, quickly becoming the de facto Marina City motto, “I saw your building on the news this morning…” (on CBS 2 with video of the fire, on ABC 7, and in the Trib).

Clout Gate. I'm coining the term here and now. I can't think of any better reason than clout to explain why an Illinois governor elected on an anti-corruption platform and ending up under long-term federal investigation would think he could get away with disgraceful deeds the likes of which got Rod Blagojevich arrested in...
It had to happen sometime. Last weekend, after five years of my Chicago life--and for the first time ever in his, Jose visited me in Chicago. That's 'joe-ZAY,' so pronounce it right in your head when you read it. My best friend from my adult years in New York. My Portuguese connection.

Great post. I got the same thing at the office this morning. Two colleagues told me, in effect, “there was a fire at your building this morning.” I didn’t even know.
If it wasn’t for the helicopters I wouldn’t have had a clue. The fire alarm system sounds like a monotone bathroom fan.
Should I Move to Marina City?
(Photo: The view from here. Credit: Looper.) “Tell me the truth: should I move to Marina City?” If there’s one question I hear more than any other, it’s that one. Over the past year, Chicago Carless has become a…
