While ticker-tape parades are old hat back home in Gotham, we sure never threw one like last Friday’s Sox celebration. It is ingrained in a New Yorker to expect that you take your life in your hands when you wade into a crowd of a million of your least-close friends for any reason save the Macy’s Parade. So you’ll pardon me if I marvel at what took place last week.

When you live and work downtown, those lunchtime eateries we all frequent on weekdays merit added importance–and scrutiny. Because when you live down (or up, depending) here, you’re bound to eat at them more. And, yes, a few really are open past weekdays at 3pm. Two of these face catty-corner across Washington and Wabash: Oasis middle-eastern cafe; and Marshall Field’s lower level Field’s Marketplace gourmet food court. And the one spectacularly worth making a special trip for is not the one you might think.

Rachelle, the author of one of Dev’s favorite reads, has been posting an occasional series of progress photos of the sidewalk and street work that’s been ongoing for months on Wabash between IBM Plaza and the forthcoming (ahem) Trump Building. Today’s posting (rachelleb.com: Tubesand & Slabs of Granite) of cute little sand tubers brings to mind something that will soon be lost here, albeit something temporary: quiet.
